South Africa Secures Victory Against England, Advances In T20 World Cup 2024
South Africa maintained their unbeaten streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating defending champions England by seven runs in St Lucia on Friday, June 21. This victory brings South Africa closer to securing a spot in the semi-finals.
South Africa successfully defended a 164-run target despite conceding 52 runs in three overs (15th, 16th, and 17th). England was at 105/4 after 15 overs when Harry Brook (53) and Liam Livingstone (33) reignited their chances.

The final three overs were crucial, with Kagiso Rabada conceding only four runs in the 18th over, Marco Jansen giving away seven runs in the 19th over, and Anrich Nortje allowing just six runs in the final over.
South Africa, having been asked to bat first, posted a total of 163/6. This was largely due to an 86-run partnership off 59 balls between openers Quinton de Kock (65 off 38) and Reeza Hendricks.
Jos Buttler's exceptional glovework, which included catching de Kock and running out Heinrich Klaasen with a direct hit, disrupted South Africa's innings. David Miller's contribution of 43 off 28 balls helped South Africa reach a competitive total. Jofra Archer took three wickets for England but conceded 40 runs.
Quinton de Kock was named Man of the Match for his impressive innings of 65 runs off 38 balls.
Quinton de Kock (Man of the Match): "The pitch plays differently during day games compared to night games. There was extra bounce early on. We bowled well in the powerplay and controlled the game nicely. Defending 160 on this wicket is a good effort."
Jos Buttler (England captain): "Quinton played with intent, which we couldn't match in the powerplay. We were happy to chase that target but his innings made the difference. Brook and Livingstone had a fantastic partnership that almost made us favourites, but credit to South Africa for closing out the game."
Aiden Markram (South Africa captain): "The last three overs were challenging but our bowlers executed their plans well. The pitch got slower after the powerplay. We were probably 10-20 runs short after our strong start. Quinny has been excellent for us recently. It was nerve-wracking towards the end, but we managed to pull through."
