Sourav Ganguly Highlights Importance Of Rohit Sharma's Leadership Ahead Of Perth Test

Sourav Ganguly, former India captain, extended his congratulations to Rohit Sharma on the birth of his second child, a son. Despite this joyous occasion, Ganguly emphasized the necessity of Rohit's presence in Australia for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Ganguly spoke to RevSportz about the importance of Rohit's leadership in the series opener in Perth, starting November 22. He acknowledged Rohit's family happiness but urged him to travel to Australia soon. "I hope Rohit Sharma goes very soon because the team needs leadership. The first Test is still a week away. If I were in his position, he should be playing the first Test. It's a big series, and Rohit will not go to Australia again after this," Ganguly stated.

Ganguly Urges Rohit to Lead India in Perth

Ganguly played a crucial role in persuading Rohit to accept the Test captaincy. He stressed how vital this series is for shaping Rohit's legacy as a leader. Initially hesitant due to workload concerns, Rohit eventually embraced the role. "I told him, 'Don't finish your career without being the Test captain of India.' I am not surprised at what he has achieved," Ganguly remarked.

Currently in India after his child's birth, Rohit has not yet confirmed when he will travel to Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly arranged for his swift departure. In his absence, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has been leading practice sessions in Perth.

Sunil Gavaskar added that Rohit's presence is essential for Team India to start strongly. Meanwhile, Aaron Finch, former Australian captain, expressed understanding if Rohit chose family commitments over cricket duties. This debate highlights the stakes involved in this five-match Test series and its significance as potentially Rohit's last tour of Australia as a player.

India's preparations are progressing well with match simulations ongoing in Perth. However, concerns remain about the team's mental strength and strategic direction if Rohit misses the first Test. As Ganguly succinctly put it, "This team needs a leader."

The anticipation surrounding this series is immense due to its potential impact on both teams' standings and individual legacies. The discussions around Rohit's availability underscore how crucial leadership is perceived within cricket circles.
