Sourav Ganguly Urges Support For Gautam Gambhir Ahead Of Border-Gavaskar Trophy Challenge
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia approaches, Sourav Ganguly has called for patience with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Ganguly believes Gambhir should be allowed to lead the team in his own style without undue criticism.
Ganguly, a former India captain and BCCI president, defended Gambhir's direct approach. He noted that while such traits are praised during victories, they often face scrutiny during challenging times.

Criticism arose after Gambhir commented on Ricky Ponting's concerns about Virat Kohli's Test form. Ponting highlighted Kohli's two Test centuries since 2020 but expressed confidence in his performance in Australia. Gambhir responded by suggesting Ponting focus on Australia's issues instead of Kohli. This exchange led to debates, with Ponting later describing Gambhir as a "prickly character."
"Let him be," Ganguly remarked in an interview. "I saw some criticism on what he said in the press conference. That's just how he is. When he won the IPL, everyone praised him for being straightforward. Now, because we've lost a few matches, people don't like it. But Gambhir hasn't changed. Give him a chance to prove himself as head coach-it's only been two months."
India's recent losses in a Test series against New Zealand and an ODI series against Sri Lanka have raised doubts about Gambhir's leadership. However, Ganguly argued that Gambhir's boldness could be advantageous in the competitive series against Australia.
"Let him say whatever he likes-it helps him focus. Ultimately, the game is won on the field, and that's what matters," Ganguly added. "The Australian series has always been intense, and his approach will only add to the competitiveness. Let's give him the support he needs."
