Sir Don Bradman's Historic Baggy Green Cap Auctioned For Rs 2.63 Crore

Legends endure, often becoming more valuable over time. This is evident in the recent auction of Sir Don Bradman's iconic baggy green cap, a significant piece of cricket memorabilia that has now made its own mark in history.

This cap, worn by Bradman during India's 1947-48 tour of Australia—his last Test series at home—was sold for an astounding Rs 2.63 crore. Quite impressive for a "sun-faded" and "worn" cap nearing 80 years old, isn't it?

Sir Don Bradman's Cap Sells for Rs 2.63 Crore

The hefty price tag isn't the only remarkable aspect; it's the rich history tied to this artifact. Known as one of cricket's greatest players, Sir Don Bradman wore this cap during a series where he scored 715 runs in six innings, averaging 178.75.

In that series, he not only achieved three centuries but also a double century, leading Australia to a dominant 4-0 victory over India.

Before adding the buyer's premium, the cap fetched Rs 2.14 crore, making it one of the priciest cricket items ever sold. However, let's not focus solely on the numbers just yet.

The auction house described the cap as "sun faded and worn," with "some insect damage" and slight wear on the peak (via PTI). Yet these imperfections add to its allure—this relic has witnessed history.

For those unfamiliar with his legacy, Sir Don Bradman was extraordinary. His career batting average of 99.94 remains unmatched and serves as a benchmark for cricketers worldwide. He concluded his career with 6,996 runs from 52 Test matches—a record still standing today.

After Bradman's retirement, his cap embarked on an intriguing journey. Initially given to Pankaj Gupta, manager of the Indian team during that series, it later went to wicket-keeper PK Sen. Since 2010, it was loaned to the Bradman Museum in Bowral before Bonhams sold it to its current owner in 2003.

This auction represents more than just acquiring a cap; it's about possessing a tangible piece of cricket history. As Sir Don Bradman's legacy continues to inspire, this cap remains a symbol of an era when cricket was defined by brilliance and one man's exceptional talent set standards for future generations.
