Evaluating Shubman Gill's Captaincy: Is He The Right Choice For Team India?
Shubman Gill led India to a 4-1 series victory against Zimbabwe in his debut as the national team captain. However, the young opener might not be the best candidate for the role again, at least for now.
Gill, who captained Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 earlier this year, was named skipper for the Zimbabwe tour. Regular players like Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya were rested after their efforts in the T20 World Cup 2024 held in the USA and Caribbean.

1. Demoting Abhishek Sharma to number three: Although this decision might have involved the team management, Gill could have demoted himself instead of pushing Abhishek down the order. Abhishek had scored a century in the previous game and was known for dominating the powerplay. This move seemed selfish to accommodate Yashasvi Jaiswal and himself as openers despite his struggles.
In his first match as captain, India suffered a humiliating defeat to Zimbabwe, failing to chase down a modest target of 116. However, under Gill's leadership, India bounced back from this initial loss to win four consecutive games and clinch the series.
2. Dropping Gaikwad from 5th T20I: Abhishek's demotion also affected Ruturaj Gaikwad, an opener by trade, pushing him to number four. This change eventually led to Gaikwad being dropped from the final match of the series. Despite scoring a fifty in the second T20I and contributing with a quick knock when Gill scored 66 off 49 balls, Gaikwad was left out of the playing XI without facing a single delivery in the fourth T20I.
The series win may have masked some of Gill's selfish decisions as captain. His batting performance was also subpar until the fifth and final match of the series. Here are some actions that highlight why he may not be suitable as India's captain right now:
3. Depriving Jaiswal a chance to score century: According to many fans, instead of allowing his opening partner Jaiswal to score a century, Gill seemed more focused on reaching his own half-century when India needed just 21 runs with five overs remaining. Jaiswal finished unbeaten on 93 off 50 balls while Gill remained not out on 58 off 39 balls as India chased down a target of 156 with ten wickets in hand and 28 balls to spare.
Despite finishing as the leading run-scorer in the series, other openers might face exclusion in future matches due to these actions. Although he had a strike rate of 125.93, it was lower compared to other openers like Jaiswal (165.88), Gaikwad (158.33), and Abhishek (174.65). Nevertheless, Gill is expected to retain his spot for India's upcoming series in Sri Lanka.
All these actions suggest that some openers from Zimbabwe's tour might be dropped for future matches against Sri Lanka. While Gill led with runs scored, others seem better suited for T20 cricket.
