Shreyas Iyer Appointed Captain Of Mumbai For SMAT 2024 As Suryakumar Yadav Confirms Participation

Mumbai is gearing up for a leadership change in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) T20 tournament. Ajinkya Rahane, who has been leading Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, will be replaced by Shreyas Iyer as captain for this domestic competition.

This decision marks a significant shift, especially for Iyer, who was recently released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Leading Mumbai offers Iyer a chance to demonstrate his leadership abilities and solidify his T20 credentials. Earlier this year, Iyer secured an IPL title with KKR and is among the marquee players in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.

Iyer to Captain Mumbai in SMAT 2024

Rahane will now play under Iyer's leadership in the T20 format. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) considers Iyer to be the ideal candidate for this role. "Iyer will lead the Mumbai T20 side for Syed Mushtaq Ali and Shaw too has been included. Rahane will be playing under Iyer's captaincy as MCA feels Iyer is the right choice for this format," a source told the Indian Express.

Another notable inclusion in the squad is Prithvi Shaw, who faced challenges earlier this year due to disciplinary and fitness concerns. After being dropped by MCA, Shaw is set to return to competitive cricket.

India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed his participation in SMAT. However, reports indicate he might miss some initial matches due to personal reasons. His eventual presence will further bolster Mumbai's team strength.

The provisional squad for SMAT 2024 includes several key players: Prithvi Shaw, Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Shreeraj Gharat, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Suryansh Shedge, Ishan Mulchandani, Siddesh Lad, Hardik Tamore (wk), Aakash Anand (wk), Sairaj Patil, Akash Parkar, Shams Mulani, Himanshu Singh, Sagar Chhabria, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Avasthi, Sylvester Dsouza, Royston Dias, Yogesh Patil, Harsh Tanna, Irfan Umair, Vinayak Bhoir, Krutik Hanagavadi and Shashank Attarde.

This reshuffle in leadership and player inclusions sets an exciting stage for Mumbai in the upcoming tournament. The changes aim to enhance team dynamics and performance as they prepare for SMAT 2024.
