T20 World Cup 2024: Ganguly Backs Kohli To Open In Final Despite Challenges

Virat Kohli's performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been underwhelming. Despite entering the tournament in good form, he has struggled to make an impact.

Kohli was assigned the role of opening batter alongside captain Rohit Sharma. However, he has not been able to replicate his usual high-scoring performances.

Ganguly Supports Kohli for Final

In seven matches, Kohli has scored only 75 runs, averaging just over 10. The 35-year-old has been dismissed for a duck twice and has scored single-digit runs five times.

This lacklustre performance has led to questions about whether Kohli should continue opening. With Yashasvi Jaiswal available, some experts suggest moving Kohli back to his original no. 3 position.

Sourav Ganguly, who advocated for Kohli to open before the tournament began, remains steadfast in his opinion. He believes Kohli can still play a crucial role in the Final despite his poor season.

"Virat should open. He just had a World Cup of 700 runs seven months ago. He is human. Sometimes he will also fail, and you have to accept it. People like Kohli, Tendulkar, Dravid, they are institutions for Indian cricket. Three-four matches don't make them weaker players. Don't rule him out in the final tomorrow," Ganguly said on Friday.

Backing Shivam Dube

Ganguly also supports keeping Shivam Dube in the team. Dube was included after an impressive IPL season with Chennai Super Kings but hasn't performed as expected in this tournament.

"Virat is a once-in-a-generation batsman. Dube is in the team because he hits big sixes to spin. He has a role to hit spinners, and he has done very well," the former India captain added.

The debate continues on whether Virat Kohli should remain as an opener or return to his previous batting position. His performance in the Final could be pivotal for India's success.
