Shamar Joseph Takes Fifer As 17 Wickets Fall On Day 1 In Guyana Test

Shamar Joseph shone on his home Test debut as 17 wickets fell on the first day of the second Test between West Indies and South Africa at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday (August 15).

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa faced early setbacks. An inswinger bowled out Tony de Zorzi in the fourth over, setting the tone for a challenging innings.

Joseph soon dismissed Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma, followed by David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, and Keshav Maharaj. This left South Africa struggling at 88/7 in just 30.3 overs. Seales and Holder further weakened their position.

South Africa struck early in West Indies' innings, with Nandre Burger removing opener Mikyle Louis for a duck in the second over. Wiaan Mulder then took four wickets, dismissing Kraigg Brathwaite, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, and Joshua Da Silva.

Burger also claimed Keacy Cartey's wicket after he scored 26 runs. Spinner Keshav Maharaj ended the day by trapping Gudakesh Motie before stumps.

Late Fightback by Jason Holder

From a precarious position of 56/6, all-rounder Jason Holder led a late fightback for West Indies. He remained unbeaten on 33*, helping his team close within 63 runs of South Africa's total.

Dane Piedt (38*) and Nandre Burger (23) showed some resistance for South Africa, frustrating the hosts and taking their total past 150. Gudakesh Motie eventually ended their stand at 63 runs, concluding South Africa's innings at 160.

Joseph's Impressive Performance

Joseph's figures of 5 for 33 were instrumental in bundling out South Africa for just 160 runs. His partnership with Jayden Seales (3 for 45) accounted for eight wickets between them.

The Windies top-order failed to capitalise on this advantage and were reduced to 97/7 by the end of the opening day.

The day's play saw intense action with both teams experiencing highs and lows. The match remains finely poised as it heads into the second day.
