Shamar Joseph Highlighted Among Initial Nominees For BBL Draft 2024
West Indies pace bowler Shamar Joseph is among the initial nominees for the Big Bash League (BBL) player draft, set for September 1, 2024. Joseph's return to Australia is eagerly awaited following his impressive performances at the Gabba. He also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year and recently took a five-wicket haul in his Test debut on home soil.
New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who has opted out of a central contract from NZC, is also in the draft. Ferguson's availability could lead to a partnership with compatriot Finn Allen, who was recently signed by the Perth Scorchers.

The BBL season will run from December 15 to January 27, featuring a mix of domestic and international talent. Here is a look at the first batch of nominees revealed for the draft:
- Laurie Evans (England)
- Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand)
- Alex Hales (England)
- Shamar Joseph (West Indies)
- Shadab Khan (Pakistan)
- Jamie Overton (England)
- Haris Rauf (Pakistan)
- Jason Roy (England)
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan)
- James Vince (England)
A few from the list are also eligible for retention by their teams from last season. Here is a look at the players with retention eligibility featuring the likes of Jamie Overton, Alex Hales and James Vince among others:
BBL Draft Nominations with retention eligibility in brackets
Laurie Evans (Perth Scorchers), Alex Hales (Sydney Thunder), Jamie Overton (Adelaide Strikers), Haris Rauf (Melbourne Stars), Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Melbourne Renegades), James Vince (Sydney Sixers).
The West Indies will be engaged in a Test series against Pakistan starting January 16. Despite this, Joseph has shown a willingness to participate in the BBL if possible. The West Indies will also be playing white-ball internationals against Bangladesh around the BBL's start, though these fixtures might offer some flexibility.
Players in the draft are categorized into Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze tiers. Clubs must select at least two players from these categories. Those with pre-draft agreements will be allocated picks based on their salary bands, with gaps from pre-draft signings expected to be filled soon.
Additionally, Jamie Overton, James Vince, and Alex Hales have commitments with the ILT20 starting January 11, which may impact their availability for the BBL.
This is just the first batch of nominees revealed for the BBL draft scheduled to be held in just over 10 days from now. More players could enter the draft in the coming days.
