Shahid Afridi Calls For Unity Among Cricket Authorities Over Champions Trophy 2025 Participation
Shahid Afridi, a former captain of Pakistan's cricket team, has urged cricket authorities, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), to resolve their differences. His call aims to ensure the success of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be held in Pakistan.
Afridi expressed his concerns on X, highlighting what he sees as cricket's most significant challenge since the late 1970s. He urged nations to unite under the spirit of sport. "Cricket is at a crucial crossroads, facing perhaps one of its greatest challenges since the late 1970s," Afridi wrote on X. "Now is the time to put differences aside and let the game unite us… I hope to see every team in Pakistan for CT25, to experience our warmth and hospitality, and to leave with unforgettable memories that transcend the field."

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking clarity from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after India's decision not to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns. This follows Afridi's appeal for unity.
The ICC recently informed PCB about BCCI's stance, confirming India's refusal to participate in Pakistan. In response, PCB consulted with the Pakistani government and formally requested transparency from ICC on this issue.
An unnamed PCB official told Geo News that ICC's financial projections could be significantly impacted without matches between Pakistan and India. "If India's participation contributes to ICC's revenue, the PCB's role is equally crucial, and without Pakistan-India matches, the ICC revenues would suffer significantly," the source said.
The BCCI has proposed a hybrid model where India would play its Champions Trophy matches at neutral venues instead of travelling to Pakistan. This model was previously discussed during Asia Cup 2023 but was rejected by Pakistan. The possibility of compromise now depends heavily on ICC intervention and cooperation from both boards.
Afridi’s comments add pressure on cricket’s governing bodies to look beyond national interests. He believes cricket can foster unity like the Olympic spirit rather than division.
With Champions Trophy scheduled for early 2025, both PCB and BCCI remain firm in their respective stances. However, fans hope for a resolution for this iconic tournament’s sake.
