Saurabh Netravalkar: The Journey From India U19 To USA's T20 World Cup Triumph

Saurabh Netravalkar became a household name on Thursday after bowling a Super Over against Pakistan to help the USA secure a historic T20 World Cup 2024 win at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

The Mumbai-born left-arm pacer successfully defended 19 runs in the Super Over against Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan. Earlier in the match, the 32-year-old took two wickets, conceding just 18 runs in four overs as Pakistan were restricted to 159/7. He dismissed Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Netravalkar: USA's T20WC Hero

Netravalkar's performance was impressive, making him an overnight sensation. His Indian roots also piqued fans' curiosity. He previously played against Pakistan in the U19 World Cup 2010 as an India player.

The Pakistan U19 team then included Babar Azam and Ahmed Shehzad, while India's squad featured KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Jaydev Unadkat, Mandeep Singh, and Sandeep Sharma. India lost that rain-affected quarter-final by two wickets.

While his peers went on to represent India, Netravalkar moved to the USA to pursue international cricket opportunities. His computer engineering degree from Sardar Patel Institute of Technology in Mumbai facilitated his move.

Netravalkar enrolled for a master's degree at Cornell University in the USA and played for the Cornell Cricket Club. He later worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the university.

In July 2016, he secured a job with Oracle and has been with the organisation for eight years, currently serving as a Principal Member of Technical Staff.

Despite his success as a software engineer, Netravalkar balanced his cricketing career well. The ICC lowering their minimum residency requirement from four years to three aided his eligibility for the USA team.

Netravalkar led the USA in their first T20I match on March 15, 2019. He also captained the team in their first ODI match after nearly 15 years against PNG on April 27, 2019.

From cleaning Yuvraj Singh's stumps at NCA in Bengaluru in 2009 to sharing dressing rooms with Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Robin Uthappa in the BCCI Corporate Trophy, Netravalkar has had an eventful journey. He has played against Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni in domestic events before moving to the USA.

Netravalkar will face India at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 12. Playing against his birth country in his new home ground will undoubtedly be a unique experience for him.
