Sanju Samson Sets Records With Second Consecutive T20I Century Against South Africa

Sanju Samson delivered an outstanding performance by scoring a century in the first T20I against South Africa on Friday, November 8. The match took place at Kingsmead in Durban, marking the beginning of a four-match T20I series. South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first.

India faced an early setback when Abhishek Sharma was dismissed on the first ball of the fourth over. Captain Suryakumar Yadav also returned to the pavilion after scoring 21 runs in the ninth over. Despite these early losses, Samson's remarkable form continued as he scored 107 runs, marking his second T20I century.

Samson's innings included two crucial partnerships: a 66-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav off 37 balls and a 77-run partnership with Tilak Verma off 34 balls. These partnerships were instrumental in stabilising India's innings and setting a competitive total.

During this innings, Samson achieved several milestones and set personal records. Notably, he became the first Indian to score consecutive centuries in T20Is. This feat has only been accomplished by three other players globally: Gustav Mckeon from France, Rilee Rossouw from South Africa, and Phil Salt from England.

This century was also significant as it marked Samson's first T20I hundred outside Asia. His previous century was against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, where he scored 111 runs. This achievement highlights his adaptability and skill across different conditions.

Samson's 107-run knock is now the highest individual score in T20Is between India and South Africa. He surpassed David Miller's unbeaten 106 scored in Guwahati in 2022. This record underscores his ability to perform under pressure against strong opponents.

Additionally, Samson equalled Rohit Sharma's record for hitting the most boundaries by an Indian in a single T20I innings. He struck 10 sixes and seven fours during his innings against South Africa, matching Sharma's feat achieved against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017.

Samson's performance not only contributed significantly to India's total but also showcased his exceptional talent and consistency on the international stage. His achievements have set new benchmarks for Indian cricket in T20Is.
