Sanjay Manjrekar Critiques Gautam Gambhir's Media Approach Before India's Series Against Australia
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently criticised Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir's approach to media interactions. This followed Gambhir's press conference in Mumbai before India's five-Test series against Australia. During the event, Gambhir addressed various contentious issues, including India's recent defeat to New Zealand and Virat Kohli's form.
Manjrekar expressed his dissatisfaction with Gambhir's conduct and responses during the press conference. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns, suggesting that Gambhir might not be suited for media duties. Manjrekar believes others could represent the team better in such situations.

In his social media post, Manjrekar wrote, "Just watched Gambhir in the press conference. May be wise for @BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He does not have the right demeanor nor the words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to front up for the media."
Gambhir's press conference came at a challenging time for Team India, which is under pressure after a 0-3 Test series loss at home against New Zealand. During the interaction, Gambhir acknowledged the team's struggles and stated that India "deserves the criticism" it has received.
Gambhir also mentioned that social media backlash does not impact him. He responded to Ricky Ponting's comments on Kohli's form by highlighting resilience within the squad and focusing on internal strength rather than external critiques.
Despite Gambhir's straightforward manner, Manjrekar suggests this approach may not be suitable for media interactions when the team faces scrutiny. He recommended that Indian captain Rohit Sharma or chief selector Ajit Agarkar handle press duties due to their more composed demeanour.
Upcoming Australian Series
The press conference also covered topics like captain Rohit Sharma's fitness and India's readiness for the Australian series. However, Gambhir's firm stance against online criticism and dismissal of Ricky Ponting's views have sparked controversy.
India will begin their tour of Australia on November 22 in Perth with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This five-Test series will challenge both players and management. Whether Manjrekar's concerns will lead to changes in how Team India handles media representation remains uncertain as fans and former players closely watch India's performance in Australia.
