Sanath Jayasuriya Steps In As Interim Coach For Sri Lanka Ahead Of India Series

Sanath Jayasuriya, a legendary cricketer from Sri Lanka, has been named the interim head coach of the national team. This appointment comes just before the important white-ball home series against India, which starts on July 27.

Jayasuriya will serve in this role until the end of Sri Lanka's Test tour of England in August-September 2024. Known for his aggressive batting and strategic skills, he has previously been a chief selector and recently acted as a consultant during the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.

Jayasuriya Named Sri Lanka's Interim Coach

The Sri Lankan board is confident in Jayasuriya's ability to lead until a permanent coach is found. His appointment follows Chris Silverwood's resignation after Sri Lanka's poor performance in the recent T20 World Cup, where they didn't advance past the league stage.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO Ashley De Silva stated, "Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well-positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution." This shows the board's trust in Jayasuriya to lead during this crucial period against India and England.

Jayasuriya's cricket career highlights his skill and dedication. He played 110 Tests, scoring 6,973 runs at an average of 40.07, including 14 centuries and 31 fifties. In ODIs, he featured in 445 matches, amassing 13,430 runs with an average of 32.36, including 28 hundreds and 68 half-centuries.

Beyond Cricket

Besides his cricketing achievements, Jayasuriya served as a Member of Parliament from 2010 to 2015. This showcases his versatility and leadership abilities beyond sports. His interim coaching role aims to use his vast experience to rebuild and strengthen the Sri Lankan team.

The board emphasized that Jayasuriya’s extensive experience makes him well-equipped for this transitional period. His deep understanding of cricket is expected to steer the team effectively during these challenging times.

A key player in Sri Lanka's 1996 ODI World Cup-winning team, Jayasuriya’s on-field exploits have left a lasting impact on cricket. His appointment as interim coach is seen as a strategic move to leverage his insights for the team's benefit.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced Jayasuriya’s appointment after Chris Silverwood resigned. The board believes Jayasuriya can inspire and guide the team during this pivotal series against India and beyond.

Jayasuriya’s illustrious career is a testament to his skill and dedication. His aggressive batting style and strategic acumen are expected to benefit the national team significantly during this transitional phase.

This decision reflects SLC’s confidence in Jayasuriya’s ability to lead effectively until a permanent coach is appointed in the coming months.
