Root Confirms Support For Buttler As England Faces T20 World Cup Hurdles
Joe Root has expressed unwavering support for Jos Buttler's captaincy of the England white-ball cricket team, despite their struggles in the T20 World Cup. Matthew Mott's squad faces potential early elimination, with their title defence faltering at the group stage. England's campaign began poorly, with rain affecting their opener against Scotland, who are now favourites to advance after Australia defeated Buttler's team on Saturday.
To progress, England must secure victories against Oman and Namibia. Additionally, they need Australia to beat Scotland by a narrow margin to have any chance of advancing based on net run-rate. This precarious situation has led to questions about Buttler's leadership. However, Root, a former international teammate and close friend of Buttler, has no doubts about his capabilities.

"Jos is one of my good friends," said Root. "I think he's a brilliant captain, so I don't think there's any question. I think they'll be absolutely fine; they've got a wonderful squad of players. They know exactly what they need to do."
Root believes that the pressure situation could bring out the best in the team. "When it's all laid out and they've got their backs to the wall, which they have in this situation now, is when they play their best cricket," he added. "It could really bring the best out of them, so I've got no worries whatsoever."
He remains optimistic about England's chances of making it to the Super 8s and performing well in the latter stages of the tournament. "If they go out and do what they all know that they're capable of doing, we'll be finding ourselves in the Super 8s and the back-end of the tournament where it really matters to play our best stuff," Root concluded.
Upcoming Matches
England will face Oman on Thursday before meeting Namibia on Saturday. Scotland will play against Australia later on Saturday, giving England the advantage of knowing what result is required for them to progress.
This scenario is also on the minds of Australian players. Bowler Josh Hazlewood has considered the implications of helping eliminate England from the competition. England coach Mott hopes Hazlewood's comments were made in jest, though he acknowledges that matters could be beyond his team's control by the weekend.
The T20 World Cup continues to unfold with high stakes for all teams involved. England's upcoming matches will be crucial in determining their fate in this year's tournament.
