Harbhajan Singh Advocates For Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Opening In T20 World Cup

India's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign faces a significant challenge as they prepare to take on Pakistan in the group stage match on Sunday, June 9. This encounter follows India's victory against Ireland in their opening match, where they aim to secure a second win and move closer to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Captain Rohit Sharma delivered an impressive performance against Ireland, although his opening partner Virat Kohli was dismissed after scoring just one run. The choice of India's opening pair has sparked considerable debate, with some advocating for a left-right combination of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while others support the pairing of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Rohit-Virat Opening in T20 World Cup

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, a member of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, recently shared his thoughts on India's opening pair. Despite his preference for a Yashasvi-Rohit combination, Harbhajan explained the rationale behind the team management's decision to pair Rohit with Virat.

"Ideally, the scenario should have been a left-right combination with Yashasvi Jaiswal opening alongside Rohit Sharma and Virat batting at number three. However, from a team's perspective, they altered the combination to ensure Shivam Dube and Axar Patel could play. This adjustment allows Axar Patel to bat at number eight, which is crucial on pitches favouring bowlers," Harbhajan Singh said on Star Sports.

According to Harbhajan, had the tournament commenced in the West Indies, India might have opted for Rohit and Yashasvi as openers due to the lesser need for a sixth or seventh bowler in those conditions.

"If the tournament had started in the West Indies, we would have seen Rohit and Yashasvi opening. There, you wouldn't need a sixth or seventh bowler," he added.

The pitches in the USA have posed significant challenges for batters, making it difficult to score runs. As India prepares to face Pakistan on Sunday, the pitch at Nassau County Stadium in New York is also under scrutiny.
