Rohit Sharma Counters Ball Tampering Allegations In T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma has addressed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq's claims that his team manipulated the ball to achieve reverse swing during the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match against Australia.

"Wickets are so dry (here). All teams are getting reverse (swing). Need to open your mind sometimes. This is not Australia," Rohit said during the pre-match press conference for India vs England semifinal in Guyana.

Sharma Denies Tampering Claims

The Indian skipper emphasised the importance of staying calm and keeping things simple ahead of their high-pressure T20 World Cup semifinal against England. He acknowledged that the team has previously struggled with a fear of failure.

"It is a bit of both," said Rohit when asked whether his side has been let down by fear of failure or bad luck in its past quests for a world title. "We want to treat this as a normal game. We don't want to be talking about that it is a semifinal. We are enjoying each other's company and we need to carry on. It is a knockout game. If you think too much it doesn't help," he asserted.

The Indian team aims to avenge their crushing 10-wicket defeat by England in the 2022 semifinal at Adelaide Oval. Rohit Sharma, reflecting on past experiences, stressed the importance of playing smart cricket.

"Honestly not a lot has changed since 2022. We have tried to play with a free mind, T20 and ODIs as well. It all depends on conditions which were challenging throughout the tournament here," said Rohit at the pre-match press conference.

Team Strategy and Role Clarity

Rohit explained that maintaining simplicity has been key for both him and his players. The team focuses on role clarity and making good decisions on the field, aiming to replicate their approach from 2022.

"We want to be a smart cricket team. I have kept things simple personally and for the players as well. We have done well with role clarity and rely on the players making good decisions on the field. Everyone knows they need to get the job done. We don't need to change from 2022 to 2024," he said, explaining the team's philosophy.

Handling Pressure

The skipper highlighted that staying cool under pressure has been beneficial for him over the years, although he admitted there are moments when one can lose composure.

"It is important to stay cool and calm. Staying calm has worked for me over the years. Sometimes you can lose cool as well. I am happy to let you do what you want but if it is at cost of the team then I won't let it happen. Indian cricket teams is always under pressure. Most of the guys are used to it," he said.

Spin-Friendly Conditions

The Caribbean wickets have been favourable for spin bowling, but Rohit remained undecided about including four spinners in their lineup for upcoming matches.

The wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel have performed exceptionally well in the West Indies leg of the tournament so far. "We will assess the conditions and then take a call on four spinners. We will see."

Inzamam's Allegations

Inzamam had alleged, "You can't ignore the fact that when Arshdeep Singh was bowling the 15th over, the ball was reverse-swinging. Isn't it too early for the new ball to start reversing?

"The ball was ready to reverse by the 12th-13th over. Umpires should keep their eyes open. We also know a bit about reverse swing. If Arshdeep Singh is able to reverse swing the ball, some serious work was done on the ball."

Rohit had led India with an impressive 41-ball 92-run knock against Australia in a crucial Super Eight stage game, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
