Rohit Sharma Unveils Calm Approach Behind India's T20 World Cup Triumph

Rohit Sharma, the T20 World Cup-winning captain, shared insights on how Team India clinched an improbable victory against South Africa in last month's final. He emphasised the importance of staying calm and focusing on the task at hand.

With South Africa needing 30 runs off 30 balls and Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller at the crease, the match seemed to be slipping away from India. However, Rohit and his team managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at Kensington Oval, ending a long wait for an ICC trophy.

India's T20 World Cup Win Strategy

Klaasen had just scored a half-century off 23 balls and was steering South Africa towards their first-ever World Cup win. But after an expensive 15th over, Rohit brought back Jasprit Bumrah into the attack, changing the game's momentum.

Despite making the right call at a crucial moment, Rohit admitted he felt "completely blank" but knew it was essential to stay focused and calm as a unit. This approach ultimately paid off.

"Yes, I was completely blank. I don't look too far ahead. It's very important for me to stay in the moment and focus on the job at hand. It was very important for all of us to stay calm and try to execute our plans," Rohit said at an event in Dallas.

After Klaasen and Miller attacked spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, bringing South Africa closer to their target of 177, India's pace trio turned the tide. Bumrah's return saw him concede just four runs in a critical over while Klaasen and Miller remained at the crease.

Hardik Pandya then delivered a crucial blow by dismissing Klaasen with his first ball of the 17th over, conceding only four singles in total. Bumrah returned to bowl another tight over, taking Marco Jansen's wicket with a spectacular delivery and giving away just two runs.

Final Overs Drama

Arshdeep Singh stepped up next, conceding only four runs in his over. Hardik bowled another excellent over, starting with Miller's dismissal after Suryakumar Yadav's assist in the field. He gave away just eight runs while defending 16 in the final over.

"When we were under immense pressure when South Africa needed 30 runs off 30 balls, the five overs that we bowled showed how calm we were. We just focussed on our job, not thinking much about anything else. We didn't panic; that was very good from our side," Rohit added.

A Historic Victory

This victory ended India's 11-year wait for an ICC trophy and a 13-year wait for a World Cup title. The Men in Blue also overcame their disappointment from losing the ODI World Cup in 2023 with this triumph.
