Riyan Parag Makes Historic Debut For India Cricket Team In Zimbabwe

Riyan Parag made history on Saturday, July 6, by debuting for the senior Indian team in the first T20I against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. This milestone was even more significant as he became the first male cricketer from Assam to represent India at this level.

The moment was particularly memorable for the 22-year-old as his father, Parag Das, a former domestic cricketer, presented him with his India cap. Interim head coach VVS Laxman handed the cap to Parag Das, who placed it on his son's head, shook his hand, and hugged him. The emotional scene included another family member sharing in the joy.

Parag earned his maiden call-up to the Indian team after an outstanding IPL 2024 season. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he scored 573 runs in 15 matches at an average of 52 and a strike rate of 149.22. His performance caught the selectors' attention and paved the way for his inclusion in the national team.

Earlier, Parag expressed his excitement about achieving his childhood dream of playing for India. In a video shared by BCCI, he mentioned that Zimbabwe would always hold a special place in his heart due to this debut.

"The feel of donning India jersey, travelling with the side is different. Coming from Assam, I had this dream of playing for India. Really happy," Parag had said in the video shared by BCCI.

A Dream Realised

"There will be a special connection for Zimbabwe when I play my first match. That will be a special moment for that ground and myself, which would be very sacred," Parag added.

Parag's journey has been remarkable as he represented Assam in 43 first-class matches and 32 List A games before making it to the national team. His debut alongside Abhishek Sharma and Dhruv Jurel marked a new chapter in Indian cricket.

This historic debut not only fulfilled Parag's dream but also brought immense pride to Assam and Indian cricket fans worldwide.
