How Riyan Parag Made It To India's T20I And ODI Squads For Sri Lanka Tour
Riyan Parag's inclusion in both the T20I and ODI squads for India's tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27, has raised eyebrows. Despite Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad's strong performances in Zimbabwe, they were dropped from the squad.
Parag's selection came as a surprise since he didn't make a significant impact in his two matches in Zimbabwe. Gaikwad was the second-highest run-scorer in the series, and Abhishek scored a century in his second game, yet both were overlooked.

A report by Times of India on July 25 clarified the situation. It revealed that Mumbai Indians star Tilak Varma was initially preferred but had to withdraw due to injury. This opened the door for Parag, who is seen as a future asset due to his all-round abilities.
"Parag is highly talented and has improved his attitude towards the game by several notches. He's now looking to stay at the wicket. To add to his value, he can bowl decently, and is a terrific fielder to boot. The selectors want to nurture him for the future," a BCCI source told TOI.
The same report also mentioned Harshit Rana's selection with an eye on developing him as a death-over specialist in white-ball cricket. The KKR pacer took 19 wickets in IPL 2024.
"It's with the idea of nurturing for a specific role that pacer Harshit Rana has been picked too, in the ODIs. He can bowl yorkers, slower balls and employ other variations at the death. That makes him a good option in white-ball cricket," the source added about Rana.
The selectors' decision indicates their focus on grooming young talent for specific roles in future matches. This strategy aims to build a robust team capable of handling various match situations effectively.
