Rishabh Pant Secured For ₹27 Crore: Lucknow Super Giants' Strategic Leadership Move At IPL 2025 Auction
In a groundbreaking move at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured Rishabh Pant for ₹27 crore. This record-breaking bid marks the highest ever paid for a player in the league's history. According to Cricblogger, this aggressive bid followed Nicholas Pooran's decision to decline the captaincy role despite being retained by LSG.
Pant's leadership skills, explosive batting, and proven ability to win matches were pivotal in LSG's decision to acquire him. Sanjiv Goenka, LSG's owner, expressed that Pant was their primary target for the auction. "This was part of our plan; we had kept ₹25-27 crore reserved for him. He brings immense value to the team with his positive outlook, resilience, and game-winning abilities," Goenka told the Times of India.

LSG's strategy focused on adding a leader who could enhance their existing core of match-winners like Nicholas Pooran and David Miller. "We haven't finalized the captaincy yet, but Pant is a leader both on and off the field," Goenka added. The competition from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals highlighted LSG's determination to secure Pant.
Zaheer Khan, LSG mentor and former colleague of Pant during his early IPL days, praised Pant's growth. "Pant's understanding of the game has grown remarkably. His mindset and ability to respond to different situations make him a natural leader," Zaheer shared.
Head coach Justin Langer emphasized Pant's unique ability to energize a team. "Beyond his skills, his character and attitude off the field are special," Langer stated. Pant's arrival aligns with LSG's intent to build a formidable leadership group that includes players like Pooran, Miller, and Ravi Bishnoi.
"We have a strong leadership team, and Pant's positivity will be an asset," Goenka said during an interview with Sports Tak. With Pant now part of LSG's roster, the franchise aims to redefine its middle-order firepower by banking on his potential as a game-changer.
The upcoming IPL season will test how Pant handles the pressure of delivering under high stakes. "He is a fighter, and this is the right time for him to step up as a leader," Zaheer emphasized. The franchise eagerly anticipates how Pant will influence their performance in future matches.
