Fielding Fumble By Rinku Singh Turns Fortunes For Sri Lanka In T20I
In the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on July 27, a Rinku Singh overthrow led to a significant moment. The incident occurred during the 12th over when Hardik Pandya bowled an angling delivery to Pathum Nissanka, who worked it towards square leg.
Nissanka completed a single comfortably and then rushed for a second run with Kusal Perera. Rinku Singh, fielding in that region, quickly grabbed the ball and threw it towards the stumps. However, the ball deflected off the stumps and crossed the deep cover boundary.

Initially, six runs were awarded for the overthrow, but after umpires' review, it was confirmed that Nissanka and Perera hadn't crossed each other when Rinku released the throw. Therefore, only five runs were added to Sri Lanka's total. Despite this, Nissanka reached his fifty with that single run.
Pathum Nissanka's impressive 48-ball 79 put India under pressure. His partnership with Kusal Mendis yielded 84 runs off 52 balls. Later, he added another 56 runs off 33 balls with Kusal Perera.
The match took a turn when Nissanka got out on the first ball of the 15th over. Sri Lanka went from a strong position of 140/1 in 14 overs to struggling at 163/7 by the end of the 17th over.
Kusal Perera was dismissed by Axar Patel soon after Nissanka's wicket. Riyan Parag then clean bowled Kamindu Mendis in the 17th over. Dasun Shanaka was run out without scoring, and Arshdeep Singh claimed Wanindu Hasaranga's wicket in the 18th over.
This sequence of events significantly shifted the momentum in India's favour, leading to Sri Lanka's collapse after a promising start by their openers.
The match highlighted how crucial fielding errors can be in T20 cricket, turning points within moments and impacting team morale and performance.
