Ricky Ponting Advises Smith And Labuschagne To Adopt Assertive Approach Ahead Of Adelaide Test
Ricky Ponting, a former Australian cricket captain and member of the ICC Hall of Fame, has shared valuable advice with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Both players have been struggling with their batting form recently.
Ponting stressed the need for a more aggressive approach, especially with the upcoming pink-ball Test against India in Adelaide. He suggested that focusing on their strengths and maintaining a positive attitude could help them regain their form.

Ponting drew parallels to Virat Kohli's batting style, noting how the Indian batsman concentrated on his strengths rather than countering opponents. "He (Virat Kohli) got away from trying to combat the opposition and focused on his strengths. That is what Marnus and (Steve) Smith need to do - find their own way and show great intent," Ponting remarked, urging Smith and Labuschagne to adopt similar strategies.
The pink-ball Test in Adelaide presents a crucial chance for Australia to recover. Ponting believes that by changing their mindset and focusing on scoring runs, Australian batsmen can unlock their potential.
Marnus Labuschagne has faced significant scrutiny due to his poor form. His performance in the Perth Test against India was disappointing, scoring only two and three runs in the first and second innings, respectively.
This continues a troubling trend for Labuschagne, who hasn't scored a century since July last year against England. In 13 ICC World Test Championship matches (2023-25), he has accumulated just 658 runs at an average of 27.41, indicating a worrying decline.
Steve Smith has also seen a dip in performance. Once a consistent performer during the mid to late 2010s, his recent form has been less impressive.
Statistics Highlight Decline
In the current WTC cycle, Smith has scored 755 runs across 13 Tests at an average of 32.82. Since his last Test century against England in the Ashes last year, his average has dropped to just 31.00 over 11 matches. This year, both batsmen have recorded low averages: Labuschagne at 24.50 and Smith at 25.55 over six Tests.
Ponting advised them to prioritize run-scoring over worrying about getting out. "Think about scoring runs first and not think about getting out first. That is always a challenge for a batter, especially when you are not in great form," he said.
The second Test in Adelaide begins on December 6, offering Smith and Labuschagne an opportunity to apply Ponting's advice effectively. Their ability to embrace this guidance could be pivotal for Australia's success against India.
