Jacob Bethell Impresses With 37-Ball Fifty On Test Debut For England Against New Zealand

Jacob Bethell, the latest addition to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, made a remarkable debut in Test cricket. He scored a quick 37-ball fifty, helping England secure an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on December 1.

Bethell was acquired by RCB for Rs. 2.60 crore during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Although he managed only 10 runs in his first Test innings, he excelled in the second innings. He formed an unbeaten partnership of 49 runs with Joe Root, who scored 23 off 15 balls, to chase down a target of 104 runs in just 12.2 overs.

Bethell Shines with Fifty on Test Debut

The young left-handed batter and slow left-arm bowler has shown significant progress since his international debut in September this year. Before his Test debut on November 28 in New Zealand, Bethell had played eight ODIs and seven T20Is.

RCB secured Bethell after a competitive bidding war against Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Entering the IPL Auction with a base price of Rs. 1.25 Crore, experts predict that Bethell will become a major star in the future.

Bethell expressed his excitement about playing at M Chinnaswamy Stadium and thanked RCB's management for their trust. In a video shared by the franchise on social media, he said: "Hi RCB fans, just wanted to say how excited I'm to play in front of you guys this year. I have seen you guys and your amazing support. So, I can't wait to play in front of you guys."

"Also, thanks a lot to the coaching staff and support staff for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Can't wait to get going. I have seen how great of a franchise you guys are. The top echelon of players that you guys have got. So, can't wait to say that I'm part of that as well. Cheers," Bethell added.

High Expectations from RCB

RCB head coach Andy Flower praised Bethell's potential and believes fans will enjoy watching him play. "Jacob Bethell is a guy with very high ceiling," Flower stated in an RCB release.

"I think when he plays, our fans will love watching him play. Left hander, beautiful striker of the ball, timer of the ball, he hits well over extra cover, he slog-sweeps the spinners, he ramps the quick bowlers," Flower continued.

"And not only will he be important for us as a batsman this year but there's a potential for him to grow and then for us to get reward in the coming years as well," Flower concluded.
