Ranji Trophy Scheduling Revamp To Mimic England's County Style For 2024-25
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating a significant overhaul of the domestic cricket schedule for the 2024-25 season. This revamp includes splitting the Ranji Trophy into two segments, with the white-ball tournaments, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, slated to take place in the interim. A draft proposal outlining these changes has been circulated among the BCCI's apex council for consideration.
This proposed restructuring comes after discussions involving key figures in Indian cricket, including BCCI secretary Jay Shah, India's captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, head coach Rahul Dravid, and National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman. Their collective input has shaped the new direction for domestic cricket scheduling.

Additionally, a novel approach is being considered for the CK Nayudu Trophy, which involves eliminating the toss. Instead, the visiting team will be granted the choice of batting or bowling first. This change is accompanied by a new points system designed to encourage balanced team performances.
The restructured format suggests that the Ranji Trophy will commence with five league matches, followed by the white-ball competitions. The remaining two Ranji league matches and the knockout stages will resume after these tournaments. This adjustment aims to address weather-related disruptions and provide adequate rest periods between matches.
Last season's tight schedule saw Ranji Trophy games spaced only three days apart, including travel time, which was deemed insufficient for player recovery. "There will be an increased gap between matches to allow players sufficient time for recovery and to maintain peak performance throughout the season," Shah stated in a recent media briefing.
The domestic season is set to kick off with the Duleep Trophy, featuring four teams selected by national selectors. This will be followed by the Irani Cup and then the Ranji Trophy, divided into two parts.
The CK Nayudu Trophy's new points system will reward batting and bowling achievements in the first innings, alongside points for leading or winning outright. The effectiveness of this system will be evaluated at season's end to determine its potential application to the Ranji Trophy in subsequent seasons.
In women's cricket, all inter-zonal competitions across one-day, T20, and multi-day formats will see teams picked by national selectors. This move underscores BCCI's commitment to enhancing structure and performance across all levels of Indian cricket.
