Punjab Kings Aim To Secure Key Players Through RTM In IPL Mega Auction 2025

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have faced challenges in the IPL since 2008, never having won the trophy. In the 2024 season, they ended up ninth with only five victories out of 14 games. This disappointing performance led to significant changes in their squad before the IPL 2025 mega auction.

PBKS adopted a bold approach by retaining just two players: Shashank Singh for ₹5.5 crores and Prabhsimran Singh for INR 4 crores. This decision left them with a substantial budget of ₹110.5 crores, the largest among all teams. They also possess four Right-to-Match (RTM) cards, more than any other franchise.

The team released several players, including Arshdeep Singh, Matthew Short, Jitesh Sharma, Sikandar Raza, Rishi Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Atharva Taide, Nathan Ellis, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Bhatia, Vidwath Kaverappa, Shivam Singh, Harshal Patel, Chris Woakes, Ashutosh Sharma, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Tanay Thyagarajann, Prince Choudhary and Rilee Rossouw.

Despite having four RTM cards at their disposal for the auction, PBKS cannot use them on uncapped players due to retaining two already. This makes their auction strategy crucial for building a balanced team.

1. Harshal Patel: Known for his skill in taking wickets during crucial moments of a match's end stages. He took 24 wickets in 14 matches last season and has an impressive IPL record with 135 wickets in 105 games.

2. Arshdeep Singh: A standout Indian pacer with 76 wickets in 65 IPL matches. In IPL 2024 alone he claimed 19 wickets across 14 games at an average of 26.58 and economy rate of ten runs per over.

3. Liam Livingstone: An ideal T20 player who can impact games both batting and bowling-wise; he scored over nine hundred runs across thirty-nine matches at a strike rate exceeding one hundred sixty-two.

4. Sam Curran: Consistently performing since joining IPL back in twenty-nineteen; scoring eight hundred eighty-three runs while taking fifty-eight wickets throughout fifty-nine appearances thus far.

5. Jitesh Sharma: The Amravati-born cricketer offers unique value as an Indian lower-order batsman capable of quick scoring along with wicketkeeping abilities demonstrated through stumpings and run-outs.

6. Kagiso Rabada: A proven match-winner whose career includes one hundred seventeen wickets from eighty games at an economy rate below nine runs per over despite slightly underwhelming performance last season where he took eleven wickets across eleven matches.

The upcoming auction is pivotal for PBKS as they aim to strengthen their squad using RTM cards effectively while managing budget constraints wisely given previous seasons' outcomes without success
