IPL 2024: Punjab Kings Triumph Over Rajasthan Royals Thanks To Sam Curran

Punjab Kings secured a significant five-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in their IPL encounter, with skipper Sam Curran playing a pivotal role. Curran showcased his all-round prowess by scoring a well-paced fifty and claiming two wickets.

Despite a modest target of 145, Punjab Kings faced challenges on a sluggish pitch. However, Curran's composed innings of 63 not out off 41 deliveries, including five boundaries and three sixes, steered his team to victory, as they reached 145/5 in 18.5 overs.

Punjab Kings Beat Rajasthan Royals

Curran found a reliable ally in Jitesh Sharma (22 runs off 20 balls), with the duo adding 63 runs for the fifth wicket. Despite this loss, Rajasthan Royals remained second on the table with 16 points, ensuring their qualification for the playoffs.

Punjab Kings encountered an early setback in their chase, losing Prabhsimran Singh in the first over to Trent Boult. Avesh Khan further dented their progress with two quick wickets in the fifth over, dismissing Rilee Rossouw and Shashank Singh. Despite these setbacks, Curran and Jitesh Sharma propelled Punjab Kings forward, with Curran particularly harsh on R Ashwin, striking him for two sixes.

However, Yuzvendra Chahal broke their partnership, leaving Punjab Kings at 111/5 in the 16th over. Nevertheless, Curran, along with Ashutosh Sharma (17 not out off 11 balls), guided their team to victory without further trouble.

Earlier in the day, despite Riyan Parag's well-crafted 48, Rajasthan Royals encountered difficulties against an assortment of accurate bowlers on a sluggish pitch, managing only 144 for nine.

Despite efforts from R Ashwin (28 runs off 19 balls) and Parag (48 runs off 34 balls) to accelerate during their 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket, it provided only temporary relief for RR, who have already secured a playoff spot.

Key Moments in Rajasthan's Innings

Early lethargy crept into the Rajasthan innings following the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who chopped a delivery from Curran (2/24) onto his stumps. Although Sanju Samson (18) and Tom-Kohler Cadmore (18 runs off 23 balls) stitched together a 36-run stand for the second wicket, they struggled to score freely against the swing and disciplined lines of Curran and Arshdeep Singh.

Despite displaying glimpses of attacking cricket, including Cadmore's towering six off Curran and Samson's elegant boundary off Arshdeep, RR found it challenging to maintain momentum. Samson's attempt to cut Nathan Ellis resulted in a simple catch for Rahul Chahar, while Cadmore fell to leg-spinner Chahar in the following over.

Ashwin and Parag's Efforts

The dismissals of Samson and Cadmore paved the way for a crucial phase in the Royals' innings, with Ashwin and Parag looking to accelerate. Ashwin's aggressive batting, highlighted by a sequence of boundaries off Chahar, showcased his batting prowess, but his innings was cut short by Arshdeep.

Parag, usually an attacking batsman, had to temper his aggression due to the fall of wickets at the other end. However, his late cut against Curran demonstrated his timing and skill as he surpassed the 500-run mark for the season, becoming only the second uncapped Indian player to achieve this feat in the IPL after Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 2023 season.

Despite these individual achievements, Rajasthan Royals struggled to gain momentum consistently, and their hopes of a late surge were dashed when Harshal Patel trapped Parag leg before.
