Phil Oliver Recognised As Middle East Sport CEO Of The Year At SPIA Awards

Phil Oliver, at the helm of the Desert Vipers, has been awarded the Middle East Sport CEO of the Year. This recognition took place at the SPIA Sports Industry Awards in Abu Dhabi's Space 32 on May 20. The award acknowledges Oliver's exceptional leadership in making the Desert Vipers a leading cricket franchise that significantly contributes to social and environmental advancements.

Under Oliver's direction, the Desert Vipers have established themselves as pioneers in sustainable sports practices. They've implemented groundbreaking initiatives such as publishing a Carbon Footprint and Plastic Impact Report and becoming the first cricket team to wear kits made entirely from recycled materials. Moreover, they have eliminated the use of single-use plastic water bottles within their operations, opting for filtered water stations and reusable bottles, setting a new standard in the sports industry for environmental responsibility.

The Desert Vipers, participating in the DP World ILT20 league, boast a roster filled with international cricket stars like Wanindu Hasaranga, Sam Curran, and Lockie Ferguson. The team has made significant strides both in their sporting performance and their off-field initiatives. They are eagerly anticipating the fourth season of the league, coinciding with the UAE National Day weekend, marking a fusion of top-tier cricket and national festivity.

Phil Oliver's innovative approach includes the appointment of cricket's only full-time Sustainability Lead, ensuring that the Vipers' environmental efforts are sustainable and integrated into the team's core identity. This strategic move has not only garnered international acclaim but also inspired positive changes throughout the region.

The Desert Vipers are also known for their commitment to community development, evidenced by Oliver's establishment of the ILT20's only full-time Development Lead and the creation of the UAE's first fully-funded girls' cricket team, which triumphed in the 2025 R66T Dubai Cup. Central to these efforts is the Desert Vipers Schools Programme, engaging over 12,000 UAE students in cricket while promoting sustainability, leadership, and healthy living, preparing them to be future leaders and change agents.

The team's impact extends further through the Sustainability Match, a specific game dedicated to raising awareness about climate action. This event, featuring fan activities, educational displays, and eco-friendly practices, serves as a benchmark for how sports can involve fans in the global sustainability dialogue.

Phil Oliver expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, "It is a huge honour to receive this prestigious award. Being recognised among such esteemed company is a testament to the incredible team effort behind everything we do. I want to thank every member of the Vipers family for their hard work, energy, and unwavering commitment.

"We're proud to be forging a new and different path in franchise cricket, but we also know there's still a long journey ahead. None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, whose shared vision has enabled us to drive meaningful change and develop strategies that we hope will leave a lasting legacy in the UAE and beyond. Thank you to Sport360X and Interact for hosting such a brilliant and inspiring event."

This acknowledgment at the SPIA Sports Industry Awards celebrates Oliver's vision and the Desert Vipers' collective efforts to redefine the role of sports franchises in promoting environmental sustainability and community involvement. By establishing strategic partnerships with entities like Bluewater Group and JA Resorts, the Desert Vipers enhance their school programs and bolster climate action initiatives, showcasing the potential of sports to serve as a catalyst for societal progress.
