Paul Adams Commends Varun Chakravarthy's Spin Mastery And Modern Challenges For Batters
Paul Adams, a former South African spinner, has commended India's Varun Chakravarthy for his outstanding T20 performances. The Tamil Nadu spinner achieved his best figures in the second T20I against South Africa, taking 5 wickets for 17 runs.
Adams, known for his unique bowling style and insights into spin, discussed modern spin trends and Chakravarthy's rise during a virtual media session facilitated by SA20. He also explored why current batters find it challenging to face spinners.

Chakravarthy's varied deliveries have perplexed South African batters in the T20 series. His standout performance was taking 5/17 in the second match. Adams praised his control and consistency, stating, "Yeah, I think his control of length has been great in terms of bowling, his googly and his leggy. His release point is at a very similar height whether he's delivering a googly or a leg break, and that's been essential in challenging the batter's defence."
Adams highlighted how Chakravarthy's consistent pressure on batters has been crucial. "His control has been absolutely magnificent in terms of how to challenge the batter's defence, and they're not sure how to line him up or read his deliveries," he said. The series is tied at 1-1, with South Africa needing strategies to counter Chakravarthy.
The upcoming India-Australia series promises intense competition. Adams expects both teams to display their strengths. He remarked, "The series is going to be a great affair, with some good cricket being played. The Australian side has some high-quality Test cricketers, and they've shown over the years that they always compete."
Adams is keen on observing Gautam Gambhir's leadership as India's head coach. "All eyes are on that series and on Gambhir, to see how he goes about it. It'll be interesting to watch how India handles Australia's pace bowlers, especially with the likes of Cummins leading the attack," he noted.
Modern Spin Bowling: Subtleties and New Challenges
T20 cricket has transformed spin bowling tactics significantly. Adams observed that spinners now adapt subtle changes to counter aggressive batting styles. "Spin is playing a big role in T20 cricket, and I always believe that when batters play aggressively, it's an opportunity rather than something to fear," he explained.
The rise of T20 leagues has driven innovation among spinners who must remain economical despite batter-friendly conditions. Adams noted that many spinners today focus more on shorter formats than Tests. "Back in the '90s, you'd see spinners playing Test cricket consistently. Now, it seems many spinners are more active in T20 and one-day formats," he said.
This shift contributes to modern batters' struggles against quality spin in traditional formats due to lacking patience and technique required for long-form play against skilled spinners.
On Dinesh Karthik Playing SA20
Leagues like SA20 offer young players vital exposure while boosting international interest in countries like India. Adams commented on Dinesh Karthik's participation with Paarl Royals: "Having DK [Dinesh Karthik] in SA20 is going to be great for India's interest in the league."
"He's been a fantastic ambassador for the game and brings a lot of positivity and knowledge that will benefit domestic players here in South Africa," Adams added.
