Pat Cummins Sets Record With Second T20 World Cup Hattrick

Pat Cummins made history on Sunday, June 23, by becoming the first player to achieve two hat-tricks in a T20 World Cup. This feat occurred during Australia's Super 8 clash against Afghanistan at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Cummins, who had previously taken a hat-trick against Bangladesh, repeated his performance against another Asian team. The 31-year-old dismissed Afghanistan's skipper Rashid Khan with the final delivery of his third over. He then removed Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib with consecutive balls in his final over to complete the hat-trick.

Cummins' Historic Second T20 Hattrick

The Australian ODI and Test captain nearly secured a double hat-trick, but David Warner was unable to complete a catch in the deep. Cummins finished with figures of 3 for 28 in his four overs.

Earlier, against Bangladesh, Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan with the last two deliveries of the 18th over. He then returned to remove Towhid Hridoy with the first ball of the last over, completing his first hat-trick of the tournament.

This was the second hat-trick of the ongoing edition and the eighth in T20 World Cup history. Cummins joined Brett Lee as the only Australians to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick. Lee's achievement also came against Bangladesh in 2007.

Since 2024, several bowlers have achieved this milestone. Ireland's Curtis Campher, Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga, and South Africa's Kagiso Rabada joined the list in the 2021 edition. In 2022, UAE's Karthik Meiyappan and Ireland's Joshua Little also accomplished this feat. Cummins is now the only player to claim two T20 World Cup hat-tricks.

Two Hat-Tricks in T20I

While Cummins is the first to claim two hat-tricks in T20 World Cups, he is not alone in achieving this feat in T20 Internationals. He joins Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga, New Zealand's Tim Southee, Malta's Waseem Abbas, and Serbia's Mark Pavlovic.

Malinga claimed his hat-tricks in 2017 against Bangladesh and 2019 against New Zealand. Southee took his first hat-trick in 2010 against Pakistan and his second against India in 2022.

Waseem Abbas achieved his hat-tricks against Belgium and France, while Mark Pavlovic claimed his against Turkey and Croatia.
