Pat Cummins' Captaincy Guides Sunrisers Hyderabad To Their Third IPL Final In 2024

When Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) invested Rs 20.50 crore in Pat Cummins during the IPL 2024 auction, it became evident that he would be the new team captain. Aiden Markram, who led SRH in 2023 and won the SA20 league for the franchise, was replaced by Cummins.

Before the IPL 2024 season began, Cummins, who led Australia to World Test Championship and ODI World Cup titles in 2023, announced that SRH would adopt an aggressive playing style under his leadership. True to his word, SRH posted a 200-plus total five times and a 260-plus total three times. They also set a record by scoring 287 runs for three wickets against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the highest total in T20 cricket.

Cummins Leads SRH to IPL 2024 Final

Cummins successfully guided SRH to the IPL playoffs for the first time in four seasons. The team had finished eighth in both 2021 and 2022 and tenth in the IPL 2023 season.

On Friday, May 24, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Cummins-led SRH defended a total of 176 by winning with a margin of 36 runs to qualify for the final. This marks their third appearance in an IPL final, with their last qualification being in 2018.

Despite Rajasthan Royals entering Qualifier 2 with an advantage due to the spin-friendly Chepauk surface and their strong bowling attack featuring Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin, Cummins' strategic decisions proved effective.

After setting a target of 175 runs, Cummins introduced left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed as an impact substitute in the eighth over. Off-spinner Abhishek Sharma joined from the other end, continuing the spin attack until the 16th over.

Although SRH lacked a specialist spinner in their playing eleven, Shahbaz Ahmed (3/22) and Abhishek Sharma effectively filled this gap. Abhishek picked up Sanju Samson's wicket and conceded just four runs in his first over.

Cummins adapted his plans as needed, even giving experienced Jaydev Unadkat just one over despite his economical bowling. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan also did not complete their full quota of overs.

In pursuit of wickets rather than merely containing runs, Cummins even gave Markram an over despite him bowling a wide delivery to short fine-leg. Under Cummins' leadership, SRH's perceived weakest link emerged as their strongest asset, restricting RR batters to 139/7 at the end of 20 overs.

Cummins demonstrated why SRH placed their trust in him. With SRH already in the final, expectations are high for Cummins to lead them to victory on Sunday, May 26.
