Pat Cummins Achieves Hattrick In T20 World Cup, Making History

Australia's fast bowler Pat Cummins achieved a significant milestone during the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match against Bangladesh. The match took place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda, on Friday, June 21.

The 31-year-old secured the first hat-trick of this edition by dismissing Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan with the last two deliveries of the 18th over. He then removed Towhid Hridoy with the first ball of the final over to complete his hat-trick.

Cummins' Historic T20 World Cup Hattrick

This feat marks the seventh hat-trick in T20 World Cup history. Cummins joins Brett Lee as the only Australians to have taken a hat-trick in this tournament. Lee's hat-trick also came against Bangladesh in 2007.

Lee was the first to achieve this milestone in the T20 World Cup, and he remained the only Australian to do so until 2021. In that year, Ireland's Curtis Campher, Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga, and South Africa's Kagiso Rabada also joined this exclusive list.

Campher's achievement is notable as he is the only player to take a double hat-trick, claiming four wickets in a row against the Netherlands. Hasaranga, like Cummins, achieved his hat-trick across two overs.

  • Brett Lee (Australia) vs Bangladesh in 2007 (Newlands)
  • Curtis Campher (Ireland) vs Netherlands in 2021 (Abu Dhabi)
  • Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka) vs South Africa in 2021 (Sharjah)
  • Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) vs England in 2021 (Sharjah)
  • Karthik Meiyappan (UAE) vs Sri Lanka in 2022 (Geelong)
  • Joshua Little (Ireland) vs New Zealand in 2022 (Adelaide)
  • Pat Cummins (Australia) vs Bangladesh in 2024 (North Sound)

This was also Cummins' first hat-trick in T20I cricket. He becomes the fourth Australian to achieve this feat in T20Is, following Brett Lee, Ashton Agar, and Nathan Ellis. Both Agar and Ellis are part of Australia's squad for the 2024 tournament.

Australian Bowlers With T20I Hattricks

  • Brett Lee vs Bangladesh in 2007 (Newlands)
  • Ashton Agar vs South Africa in 2020 (Wanderers)
  • Nathan Ellis vs Bangladesh in 2021 (Dhaka)
  • Pat Cummins vs Bangladesh in 2024 (North Sound)

"I had a few [hat-tricks] in juniors but never for Australia," said Cummins, who was named player of the match. "Agar and Ellis have T20 hat-tricks, so it's good to join that club. Pretty awesome to tick that off."

Cummins has been enjoying an excellent run in international cricket over the past year. He finished with figures of 3/29 as Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs using the Duckworth-Lewis method at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
