Papua New Guinea Announces Experienced Squad For T20 World Cup 2024

Papua New Guinea has officially announced their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the United States and West Indies in June. This marks their second participation in the tournament, with a notable retention of 10 players from their debut in 2021. Assad Vala will once again captain the team, following their successful qualification through the East Asia-Pacific regional final in July 2023.

The team's vice-captain role is assigned to leg-spinning all-rounder CJ Amini, with Jack Gardner, previously a reserve in 2021, now securing his spot among the 15 players. Papua New Guinea showcased an impressive performance in the qualifiers, winning all six matches to secure their place in the tournament against teams like Japan, Vanuatu, and the Philippines.

Tatenda Taibu, the recently appointed head coach and former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper, has chosen to reward the majority of the squad that achieved qualification. This includes Chad Soper, who returns to the squad after notable performances on tours to Malaysia and Oman. John Kariko, a young left-arm orthodox spinner, stands out as the youngest player in the group. He brings experience from playing in West Indies conditions during Papua New Guinea's stint at the U19 World Cup in 2022.

The team is well-equipped with eight all-rounders, providing a versatile mix of right and left-arm bowling options. Among them, Sema Kamea and Kabua Vagi Morea have already made their mark during the qualifying matches, with Morea achieving a hat-trick against the Philippines.

Papua New Guinea's campaign kicks off with a challenging match against hosts West Indies on June 2, followed by a game against Uganda on June 5. Both teams will be eager to secure their first victory of the tournament. The Barramundis will then face Afghanistan on June 13 before concluding their group stage matches against New Zealand.

Assadollah Vala (captain), CJ Amini (vice captain), Alei Nao, Chad Soper, Hila Vare, Hiri Hiri, Jack Gardner, John Kariko, Kabua Vagi Morea, Kipling Doriga, Lega Siaka, Norman Vanua, Sema Kamea, Sese Bau, Tony Ura.

This selection reflects Papua New Guinea's strategic approach to leveraging experienced players while integrating young talent. Their performance in the upcoming T20 World Cup will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike as they aim to make a significant impact on the international stage.
