Pakistan Bows Out Of T20 World Cup 2024, Fans Unleash Meme Fest

Babar Azam-inspired memes took centre stage as Pakistan exited the T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, June 14. To qualify for the Super 8, Pakistan needed a USA defeat against Ireland before winning their last group stage match on Sunday.

However, USA's match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain and damp patches at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida. The shared point from the abandoned match helped USA qualify for the Super 8.

USA finished their group stage with five points in four matches. Even if Pakistan beat Ireland in their last match on Sunday, they will fall a point short of the USA.

Top teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super 8. India became the first team to qualify from Group A after beating USA on Wednesday.

Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign was disrupted by USA in their first outing as the Babar Azam-led side lost in a thrilling Super Over finish. The Men in Green then failed to chase 120 against India, despite being at 80/3 in 14 overs.

This marks Pakistan's second consecutive exit from the group stage of an ICC World Cup. They also failed to advance past the group stage in last year's ODI World Cup. Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy after the failure in India but returned to lead the team just ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Weather Woes

All eyes were on the weather conditions in Florida. Initially, it seemed that USA and Ireland might play at least a 5-over per side match.

The match officials waited for three hours before deciding to call off the match. Although it had not rained since 8:30 AM (local time), wet patches near the 30-yard circle delayed the start of the match scheduled for 10:30 AM.

Several rounds of inspection were conducted before a lightning alert forced players and officials to rush to the dressing rooms. Moments later, rain followed, leading officials to officially call off the match.
