T20 World Cup 2024: Analyzing Pakistan Cricket Team's Potential Hurdles
The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to be another challenging tournament for Pakistan cricket. Following their disappointing performance at the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, the team has undergone significant changes. Captains were shuffled, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) saw a regime change, new selectors were appointed, and two star players came out of retirement to join the squad.
Pakistan cricket is known for its volatility, and this unpredictability is evident in the team's recent performances. The Men in Green lost five of their nine league stage matches in India. Babar Azam initially stepped down from captaincy but has returned to lead the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite his return, the chances of redemption appear slim.

Poor Form
Pakistan's recent form has been concerning. Their T20I series against a second-string New Zealand team ended in a draw, followed by a historic loss to Ireland in the first T20I of a three-match series. The team then travelled to England, where they lost 2-0.
Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are the only consistent performers with the bat. Fakhar Zaman has struggled with inconsistency, and the middle-order has repeatedly underperformed. Although Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim returned from retirement to join the squad, their impact has been minimal. Naseem Shah has been expensive, and the spin department lacks effectiveness.
Poor Selection
The selection decisions have also been questionable. Saim Ayub was picked as an opener but was benched for the final T20I against England as Babar and Rizwan resumed opening duties. Azam Khan was chosen as wicketkeeper-batter but continues to struggle at the international level.
Usman Khan, with only six T20Is under his belt, was given the crucial number three slot in one of the games against England. Naseem Shah's selection is justified by his stature, but he has been costly on his international comeback, conceding over 35 runs in each of his last four T20s. Similarly, Amir has managed only two wickets in his last five outings.
Overall Pressure and Team Politics
The pressure within the team and board politics have also played a role in Pakistan's struggles. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the selectors even before the squad announcement for the T20I World Cup.
Shaheen Afridi was appointed as T20I captain after the World Cup 2023 but was sacked shortly after a series. Babar Azam's leadership is once again under scrutiny. Imad Wasim was dropped from the playing eleven against England despite performing well with figures of 2/19 and scoring 22 runs with the bat.
Conversely, Shadab Khan was retained despite poor performances. The all-rounder scored 0, 3, and 3 in his last three outings and failed to take a wicket while conceding 20, 55, and 54 runs respectively.
As Pakistan heads into the T20 World Cup 2024, they face significant challenges both on and off the field. The team's recent form, questionable selection decisions, and internal pressures suggest that overcoming these hurdles will be an uphill battle.
