Pakistan Cricket To Undergo 'Major Surgery' For T20 World Cup 2024 Revival
Following Pakistan's unexpected defeat to India on Sunday, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has called for significant changes to rejuvenate their cricket team.
Naqvi addressed a press conference in New York, discussing potential changes to the national team to reverse their fortunes. Pakistan is on the verge of elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024.

"It seemed that a minor surgery would suffice for the Pakistan cricket team, but after the extremely poor performance, it has become clear that the team needs major surgery," Naqvi stated.
He expressed disappointment over Pakistan's two defeats, first against co-hosts USA and then India. Naqvi also mentioned that cricket in Pakistan is at an all-time low and called for comprehensive changes soon.
But what are the significant changes Pakistan needs to sustain a cricketing environment that provides security to players? Although the players are largely at fault for their performance in the ongoing ICC event, the board and political scenario in the country are equally responsible for their decline.
The dynamics of Pakistan cricket and its cricket board are as fragile as the government in Pakistan. With each change in governance, the Pakistan Cricket Board undergoes personnel changes. To sustain the cricketing environment and promote a more settled atmosphere, steady management at the top is crucial. The instability within PCB has affected Pakistan cricket significantly. Therefore, administrative stability is essential to bring positive changes at the grassroots level.
Pakistan experienced numerous changes just before the T20 World Cup. The reappointment of Babar Azam as captain was surprising, given Shaheen Afridi had only captained them for one series. This decision was problematic, and PCB is to blame for it.
In recent months, Pakistan cricket has faced several setbacks. Internal conflict and lack of stability within the team have played a significant role in these issues. Constantly changing the team every few weeks is not sustainable. PCB must identify and trust a set of players and provide them with an environment conducive to success. Reports of internal issues within the Pakistan team have surfaced recently, and PCB must address these narratives.
Pakistan Needs Holistic Change
A multifaceted change is necessary for Pakistan to rise again. The system, infrastructure, and management all require significant revamping.
The level of first-class cricket in Pakistan needs substantial improvement. Better infrastructure and fitness programmes are essential to prepare players for international competition. The current T20 squad includes too many unfit players who have not contributed positively to the team's performance.
Reports from Pakistan indicate regional conflicts within PCB that need resolution. Players across the country must be given opportunities. Additionally, decisions to bring back retired players should cease. Focus should be on providing opportunities for young players to develop.
