Pakistan's Slim Hope For T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 After Consecutive Losses

Pakistan is on the brink of an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 following a narrow 6-run defeat to arch-rivals India on Sunday, June 9, in New York. This loss comes after their shocking defeat to co-hosts USA in Dallas, Texas, on June 6.

Led by Babar Azam, Pakistan faced one of the biggest World Cup upsets when they lost to the USA via Super Over. Three days later, they find themselves staring at an early exit after their defeat to India at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan's Tense Road to Super 8

Despite bowling out India for 119 on a challenging pitch in New York, Pakistan fell short in their chase. They collapsed from 73 for 2 in 12.1 overs to 88 for 5 in 16.3 overs, losing set batter Mohammad Rizwan (31 off 44 balls) in the process.

Still in contention, Pakistan further lost two wickets with the total at 102 and could only manage to reach 114/7 in their allotted 20 overs. This result brings them closer to elimination rather than advancing to the next round. However, the 2009 champions still have a slim chance to reach the Super 8s.

Winless in two matches, Pakistan currently occupies the fourth spot in Group A points table. India and USA hold the first and second spots respectively, with Canada in third place and Ireland at the bottom.

If the standings remain unchanged, Pakistan will face an early departure. However, there is still a glimmer of hope for Babar Azam's team to progress to the Super 8.

Firstly, they need to win their remaining matches against Canada (June 11) and Ireland (June 16) by significant margins. Additionally, they must hope that USA loses their remaining matches against India (June 12) and Ireland (June 14) by large margins to stay in contention.

With a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.150, Pakistan has a challenging task ahead to surpass USA's NRR of +0.626. A substantial defeat for USA in their remaining two matches could provide some hope for Pakistan's qualification.

India might assist by defeating USA, but Pakistan's team may struggle to secure victories themselves as they have already faced an upset loss. There is no certainty that they can beat Ireland and Canada.

Ireland has previously upset Pakistan in past World Cups, while Canada has shown resilience in their first-ever T20 World Cup. Pakistan was expected to join India from Group A in the Super 8s, but the 2022 runners-up may soon depart from the USA and Caribbean.
