Ollie Pope Hails 'Lucky Charm' Ramsdale After Scoring Century Against West Indies

Ollie Pope praised Aaron Ramsdale after scoring a century against West Indies. Pope hit 121 from 165 balls at Trent Bridge, starting the second Test strongly for England. Arsenal's Ramsdale, who watched Pope's double century against Ireland last year, attended as Pope's guest. After his sixth Test century, Pope believes Ramsdale is his lucky charm.

Pope began 2024 with a remarkable 196 against India in Hyderabad but struggled in the following Tests. He only surpassed 30 once in four Tests and managed a top score of 63 for Surrey in this season's County Championship. This led him to question his form. However, he credited England batting coach Marcus Trescothick for his recent improvement.

Pope Credits Ramsdale for Test Century

"I wouldn't say I had doubts," Pope said, "but I was thinking: 'why is everyone else in the country scoring runs in county cricket, but England's number three isn't going out and averaging 50?' [Marcus] came to London, and we did some really good work, which has put me in really good stead for the Test summer."

Pope shared that Ramsdale messaged him the night before the match, and he arranged tickets for him. "He can come more often," Pope remarked. "I'm obviously a big Arsenal fan, so I go to support him a fair bit. He seems to be my lucky charm on the cricket pitch as well."

England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 18, 2024 tweeted: "That run feeling A brilliant day for England and @OPope32!"

Pope's performance was crucial as it helped England reach a total of 416 all out. His confidence has been bolstered by both Ramsdale's presence and Trescothick's guidance.

The combination of support from Ramsdale and coaching from Trescothick has evidently played a significant role in Pope’s resurgence. This blend of personal motivation and professional coaching appears to have set him up well for the ongoing Test series.

As England continues their series against West Indies, Pope’s form will be vital. His ability to convert starts into big scores could be key to England’s success.
