Nicholas Pooran Powers MI New York To Victory In MLC 2024 Season Opener
MI New York began their title defence in the Cognizant Major League Cricket 2024 season with a dominant six-wicket victory over Seattle Orcas on Friday.
All eyes were on Nicholas Pooran at Church Street Park in Morrisville. The West Indian wicketkeeper-batter continued his stellar form from the 2023 edition, scoring an unbeaten 62 off just 37 balls. His performance helped MI New York chase down the target of 109 runs in just 14.2 overs.

Pooran's power-hitting abilities proved too much for the Seattle Orcas. Despite losing Shayan Jahangir (3) and Tim David (12), Pooran and his fellow countryman Kieron Pollard (8*) guided their team to victory, securing their first win of MLC 2024.
The initial momentum seemed to be in Seattle Orcas' favour after early wickets of Ruben Clinton (6) and USA's national team skipper Monank Patel (8). Cameron Gannon was the main bowling aggressor, taking both wickets in the third over and giving his team hope.
Earlier in the day, MI New York's bowlers showcased their skills by bowling out Seattle Orcas for just 108 runs. Rashid Khan and Trent Boult each took three wickets, never allowing their opponents to settle into the match.
Boult provided an early breakthrough in the opening over, sending Nauman Anwar back to the pavilion for a duck. Anwar's late attempt to cut the ball resulted in a faint edge that travelled to wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran.
Seattle Orcas' Struggle
With Quinton de Kock (5) still at the crease, Seattle Orcas had hopes of posting a competitive score. However, de Kock was dismissed in Boult's next over when his attempt to hit through leg side resulted in a top edge caught by Pooran.
From then on, MI New York maintained control by taking regular wickets. Shubham Ranjane ended as Seattle Orcas' highest run-getter with a tidy innings of 35 runs off 31 balls. He found the boundary regularly but fell short trying to hit Rashid Khan for consecutive sixes, getting caught by Tim David instead.
Harmeet Singh's Contribution
Harmeet Singh, who recently played for the USA in the T20 World Cup, contributed with a 20-run cameo. Despite his efforts, Seattle Orcas set a target that was chased down by MI New York with 34 balls to spare.
Pooran turned the tide by hitting Gannon for two sixes and as many fours in his next over. This shifted momentum back to MI New York’s favour.
Brief Scores: MI New York 111/4 (Nicholas Pooran 62*, Tim David 12; Cameron Gannon 2/40) beat Seattle Orcas 109 (Shubham Ranjane 35, Harmeet Singh 20; Rashid Khan 3/22) by six wickets.
