New Zealand's George Worker Swaps Cricket For Corporate Career

George Worker, the New Zealand cricketer, has retired from professional cricket at 34. This decision concludes his 17-year-long career in the sport.

Worker's cricketing journey began with Central Districts in the 2007-08 season. He quickly gained recognition as a skilled left-handed batsman and part-time left-arm spinner.

Worker Trades Cricket for Finance

Throughout his career, Worker became a dependable player in New Zealand's domestic cricket. He amassed notable records, especially in List A cricket, scoring 6721 runs at an average of 43.64, including 18 centuries and 37 half-centuries. In first-class cricket, he scored 6400 runs with an average of 29.49. In T20 matches, he accumulated 3480 runs with a strike rate of 123.57.

One of the highlights of his domestic career was during the 2017 Ford Trophy. Worker scored 659 runs in ten innings, averaging over 82. This performance brought him back into the selectors' radar, leading to his recall to the national team in 2022 as a replacement for Mark Chapman during a home series. However, he did not get to add to his international caps.

Worker's international career was short-lived but memorable. Between 2015 and 2018, he played ten One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two T20 Internationals for New Zealand. Notably, he had a Player-of-the-Match performance on his T20I debut in Harare against Zimbabwe in 2015, scoring a quickfire 62 off 38 balls. His ODI debut also came on that tour, where he managed three half-centuries.

As Worker transitions from cricket to the corporate world, he joins investment services firm Forsyth Barr. He looks forward to applying the same dedication and passion that defined his cricket career to his new role.

A New Chapter Begins

Auckland Cricket will miss Worker's leadership and experience but supports his new journey wholeheartedly. Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Worker expressed gratitude for the friendships and memories he made along the way.

"I am grateful for all the friendships and memories I have made throughout my cricketing journey," said Worker.

Now embarking on this new chapter, Worker is eager to bring his skills and experiences to the financial sector.
