Bowlers Propel New Zealand To Decisive Victory Over Uganda In T20 World Cup
An all-round bowling effort led New Zealand to their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024, securing a 9-wicket victory over Uganda in a Group C match at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad & Tobago.
Trent Boult set the tone with two wickets in the opening over. His teammates followed suit, bundling Uganda out for just 40 runs after Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson opted to bowl first.

Left-arm pacer Boult (2/7) and veteran quick Tim Southee (3/4) were instrumental in dismantling Uganda's batting lineup. Uganda narrowly missed setting the lowest total in T20 World Cup history by just one run.
Uganda had previously been bowled out for the joint-lowest team total of 39 against West Indies last week. The disparity between them and top-tier teams has been evident throughout the tournament.
With the ball swinging significantly in the powerplay, New Zealand capitalised, reducing Uganda to 9/3. Boult dismissed Simon Ssesazi leg before wicket on the third ball of the innings and bowled Robinson Obuya on the next delivery.
New Zealand's Swift Chase
In response, New Zealand wasted no time. Devon Conway (22*) led the chase, helping his team reach the target with almost 15 overs to spare. Finn Allen (9) and Rachin Ravindra (1*) also contributed to the runs.
The Kiwis knocked off the target in just 5.2 overs, marking their first win of the tournament. Despite this victory, New Zealand finished outside of the semifinals for the first time in a decade after losing their opening two games to Afghanistan and hosts West Indies.
Uganda's Tournament Performance
The African side has struggled throughout the tournament, failing to surpass the 80-run mark in any match. They concluded their campaign with three losses and one win against Papua New Guinea earlier this month.
Key Moments and Statistics
Boult's twin strikes in the first over set a decisive tone for New Zealand. Southee claimed Uganda's third wicket in the fourth over, trapping Alpesh Ramjani leg before wicket. Spinners Mitchell Santner (2/8) and Rachin Ravindra (2/9), along with pacer Lockie Ferguson (1/9), joined in on the action.
Southee returned in the 18th over to claim two more wickets, trapping Fred Achelam and Juma Miyagi leg before wicket on consecutive deliveries. Kenneth Waiswa was Uganda's top scorer with 11 runs.
Tournament Standings
The result moved New Zealand up to third place in Group C standings. However, they remain out of contention for a spot in the Super Eights, with Afghanistan and West Indies having already qualified.
This match also marked the end of Uganda's tournament journey, having registered one win from four matches.
