Shikhar Dhawan Shines With Half-Century As Karnali Yaks Fall Short Against Kathmandu Gurkhas In NPL 2024
Shikhar Dhawan's impressive performance was the highlight of the opening match of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2024. His remarkable display in this eagerly awaited T20 competition demonstrated his skill and star appeal.
Dhawan, representing Karnali Yaks, played a crucial innings by scoring 72 runs off 51 balls against Kathmandu Gurkhas. This innings marked a return to form for him after a slow start in the tournament.

Initially, Dhawan played cautiously, reaching 33 runs from 35 balls. However, his experience came to the fore as he accelerated towards the end. His innings included four boundaries and five massive sixes, helping Karnali Yaks reach a total of 149/5. Despite his efforts, Karnali narrowly lost by three wickets with just three balls remaining.
Besides Dhawan's contribution, Chadwick Walton was the only other significant scorer with a quick 21 off 15 balls. The rest of the team struggled against Kathmandu Gurkhas' disciplined bowling attack led by Gerhard Erasmus and captain Karan KC.
The chase by Kathmandu Gurkhas was driven by key performances from Gerhard Erasmus, who scored 38 off 28 balls, and Sumit Maharjan with an unbeaten 40 off 37 balls. Karan KC added a late surge with 28 runs off just 10 deliveries. Despite tight bowling from Bipin Sharma of Karnali Yaks, Gurkhas clinched victory in a tense finish.

The Nepal Premier League has drawn considerable international interest with stars like Martin Guptill, James Neesham, and Sohail Tanvir participating. Dhawan's presence, reportedly earning USD 30,000 per match, has significantly enhanced the league's allure.
