Nathan McSweeney To Make His Test Debut As Australia Names Squad For Perth Test Against India

Nathan McSweeney is set to make his debut in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series opener. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis received an unexpected call-up as Australia announced a 13-member squad for the first Test against India in Perth on Sunday, November 10.

McSweeney secured the opening slot for the Perth Test, starting on November 22, beating competition from Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Sam Konstas. The 25-year-old was favoured just before the second unofficial Test for Australia A against India A earlier this week.

McSweeney Set for Test Debut in Perth

Despite scoring 14 and 25 on a challenging pitch while opening for the first time in his first-class career, McSweeney was chosen over others. Usman Khawaja will partner with him at the top of the order, as confirmed by Cricket Australia's chief selector.

Josh Inglis, who leads Australia in the third ODI and subsequent T20I series against Pakistan, has been called up as a backup wicketkeeper and batter. The 29-year-old's impressive Sheffield Shield season earned him this opportunity.

In addition to Inglis and McSweeney, Scott Boland has been named as a reserve pacer. He will support Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, who are expected to lead the pace attack in Perth.

Steve Smith is anticipated to bat at number four with Marnus Labuschagne retaining his number three position. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh return to the squad after paternity leave to strengthen batting options.

"Nathan has displayed attributes we believe are suited for Test cricket along with a strong recent domestic record," Bailey told cricket.com.au. "His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favour."

"Similarly, Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad," Bailey added.

Wicketkeeping Duties

Alex Carey will take on wicketkeeping responsibilities. He has scored two centuries in three Shield matches, leading with 452 runs at an average of 90.40. Nathan Lyon will serve as the sole specialist spinner.
