Mumbai Announces Strong Squad For Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 With Shreyas Iyer As Captain
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a key domestic T20 cricket tournament in India, is scheduled to start on November 23. Mumbai, known for its strong cricketing history, has announced a formidable 17-member team for this event. Shreyas Iyer will lead the squad as captain.
Iyer, who successfully led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL victory in 2024, now aims to steer Mumbai towards triumph in the T20 format. Ajinkya Rahane, who captained Mumbai to their first SMAT title in the 2022-23 season, will play under Iyer's leadership. Despite his experience and reliability, Rahane will miss star batter Suryakumar Yadav in the early matches due to personal reasons.

Prithvi Shaw's return to the Mumbai squad is noteworthy. Previously dropped from the Ranji team over fitness and discipline concerns, Shaw has faced challenges with consistency recently. However, Mumbai sees potential in him for the T20 format and hopes his inclusion will help revive his career.
Injuries have affected some players like Shivam Dube, Musheer Khan, and Tushar Deshpande, leading to squad adjustments. Nonetheless, the team maintains a balance of seasoned players and young talent. Emerging cricketers such as Siddhesh Lad, Tanush Kotian, and Shardul Thakur bring depth alongside rising stars like Arjun Tendulkar.
Mumbai's campaign in SMAT 2024 begins with a match against Goa on November 23. All games are set to take place in Hyderabad. The team is placed in Group E.
