Mumbai Indians: First Team To Bow Out Of IPL 2024 Playoffs Race
The IPL 2024 season has seen its first major team, the Mumbai Indians (MI), officially eliminated from the playoff race. This development came after the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured a 10-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, have found themselves in a tight spot after losing eight out of their 12 matches, leaving them with a maximum potential of only 12 points even if they win their remaining two league stage games.
Currently, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are leading the points table with 16 points each, having three matches left to play. SRH's recent win places them third with 14 points from 12 matches. Close behind are the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and LSG, each with 12 points but varying numbers of matches played.

Despite Mumbai's recent victory over SRH by seven wickets, SRH's subsequent win against LSG extinguished any remaining hopes for Mumbai to secure a spot in the top four. This season has been particularly challenging for Mumbai, marked by a series of defeats and off-field controversies that have overshadowed their campaign.

The season began on a rocky note for Mumbai with a loss against Rajasthan, followed by two wins but then a loss to CSK. Their journey took a turn for the worse with four consecutive losses thereafter. Adding to the team's challenges were significant off-field issues even before the season started. Notably, Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai to five IPL titles, was replaced as captain by Hardik Pandya. This decision was met with considerable backlash from fans, and Pandya faced harsh criticism and booing during matches. Hardik's move to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL 2024 auction was among the most talked-about changes this season.
This year's campaign for Mumbai Indians has been fraught with difficulties both on and off the field. The team's performance has been underwhelming, leading to their early exit from playoff contention. As MI looks ahead, the focus will undoubtedly shift towards rebuilding and preparing for a stronger comeback in the next season.
