Why Mumbai Indians Are Keen On Signing Umran Malik For IPL 2025
Reports have surfaced that Umran Malik might be released by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the IPL 2024 runners-up. The fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir featured in just one match last season.
The 24-year-old has been with SRH since his IPL debut in 2021, initially joining as a short-term replacement for T Natarajan during the UAE leg. His impressive performances led the 2016 champions to retain him for INR 4 crore.

In the 2022 season, Malik showcased his best form, taking 22 wickets in 14 matches. However, his performance dipped in subsequent seasons. In IPL 2023, he played only eight matches, securing five wickets at an average of 43.40 and an economy rate of 10.85.
If SRH releases him, several IPL franchises will likely target Malik during the auction. Among them, Mumbai Indians are keen to recruit him after a disappointing 2024 season where they finished last with only four wins in the group stage.
Mumbai Indians see the upcoming season as a chance to recover from their poor performance in 2024 and regain their dominance. Their pace attack was a significant issue last season, with only Jasprit Bumrah performing up to expectations.
Malik's raw pace and wicket-taking ability could significantly bolster MI's bowling lineup. He consistently clocks speeds above 150 km/h, which can trouble opposition batters on pace-friendly tracks.
Malik has taken 11 wickets in eight T20Is and 29 wickets in 26 IPL matches, including a five-wicket haul. As Mumbai Indians aim to rebuild their squad for a serious title bid next season, acquiring Malik could address their pace bowling concerns.
A potential partnership between Malik and Bumrah could transform MI's bowling attack into a formidable force. This strategic move might be crucial for MI's success going forward.
Joining Mumbai Indians could also benefit Malik by easing his path into the national team. The experienced MI coaching staff would provide valuable guidance and support to the young pacer from Jammu & Kashmir.
This association could be mutually beneficial, helping both parties achieve their goals in the upcoming seasons.
