IPL 2025: CSK's Bid To Have MS Dhoni Play As Uncapped Player Through Rule Revision

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a key player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), might continue playing in the IPL for another season. The 43-year-old has been instrumental in leading CSK to five IPL titles and underwent knee surgery last year to participate this season.

The IPL franchise owners and BCCI recently met to discuss various topics, including the impact player rule and player retentions. During this meeting, CSK requested the reintroduction of an old rule that considered retired international players as uncapped if they had been retired for over five years. This rule was scrapped in 2021.

CSK Eyes Dhoni for IPL 2025 as Uncapped

CSK aims to retain Dhoni ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Retaining a capped player is more expensive than an uncapped one. The base price for retaining an uncapped player is ₹4 crore, while it can range from ₹8-12 crore for a capped player.

CSK's attempt to reduce costs by categorising Dhoni as an uncapped player faced opposition from other franchises. A head of another franchise told ESPNCricinfo that considering a retired international player as uncapped is disrespectful to the player.

Dhoni recently spoke about his plans for the next IPL season. He mentioned that his decision would depend on the retention rules and salary cap set by the IPL. "There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court," Dhoni said in Hyderabad.

Despite CSK's efforts, their plan to retain Dhoni at a lower cost has failed. The franchise will need to explore other options to keep their star player ahead of the mega auction.

The importance of keeping Dhoni with CSK cannot be overstated, but paying a hefty sum for his retention might be challenging for the team. This financial consideration was why CSK wanted him marked as an uncapped player.

MS Dhoni's age has raised questions about his future participation in the IPL. However, he remains a vital part of CSK and may continue playing in IPL 2025, depending on various factors.

The discussions between BCCI and franchise owners also touched upon other significant aspects like the impact player rule and overall team strategies for upcoming seasons.

CSK's cheeky attempt to cut costs by retaining Dhoni through an old rule has been thwarted by opposition from other franchises. They must now find alternative ways to keep their prized asset within budget constraints.

Dhoni's patient approach towards deciding his future reflects his commitment to making choices that benefit the team. His final decision will come after considering all relevant factors and regulations set by the IPL authorities.
