'One Of The Best': Eoin Morgan Endorses McCullum For England's White-Ball Coach Role
Former England captain Eoin Morgan has praised Brendon McCullum as one of the top coaches globally, suggesting he should be considered for the white-ball coaching vacancy. Matthew Mott recently resigned from this role after leading England to T20 World Cup success in 2022. However, England struggled in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, finishing seventh and failing to defend their T20 title earlier this year.
Morgan believes McCullum could bring similar success to the white-ball format as he has with the Test team. Under McCullum's guidance, England's Test team has won 17 out of 25 matches, lost eight, and drawn one. Their recent 3-0 series victory over West Indies highlighted debutants Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith, who played crucial roles in the win.

Morgan suggested that McCullum could be an ideal replacement if a balance can be found between his current Test coaching duties and the white-ball role. "In my eyes at the moment, you would go to Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum," Morgan told Sky Sports. "I say that because I believe he [McCullum] is one of the best coaches in the world."
Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as interim head coach following Mott's departure. Trescothick will lead the team for the upcoming Australia series in September. Despite this temporary arrangement, Morgan believes England needs a seasoned coach like McCullum rather than giving an inexperienced candidate a chance to grow into the role.
Despite their recent struggles in white-ball cricket, England has shown promise under McCullum's leadership at Test level. The team's dramatic turnaround has been attributed to his partnership with Stokes and his ability to bring out the best in players. This success has led Morgan to advocate for McCullum's consideration for the white-ball coaching position.
"I'm not sure McCullum has been given a lot of thought and if anything, he should," Morgan stated. He urged Key to have a conversation with McCullum about taking on this additional responsibility due to his proven track record.
Morgan emphasized that Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, must make the job appealing to attract top talent like McCullum. "Yes, the big question will be how he makes it fit over the course of the 12 months," Morgan said. "But from Rob Key's point of view, he needs to make the job attractive."
The Future of England's Coaching
The decision on who will permanently fill the white-ball coaching role remains crucial as England aims to regain its dominance in international cricket. The upcoming Australia series will be an important test for Trescothick as interim head coach while discussions about long-term solutions continue.
Morgan also pointed out that McCullum's versatility and capability as a coach have been evident through his work with New Zealand cricket and now with England's Test team. "I've played under Brendon as a coach," Morgan added. "We've seen what he's done in New Zealand cricket over the years and the success that he's had."
Ultimately, Morgan's endorsement of McCullum underscores his confidence in McCullum's ability to elevate England's performance across all formats of cricket.
