GT20 Canada 2024: Montreal Tigers Secure Third Win, Bangla Tigers Edge Out Toronto

Local talents Dilpreet Bajwa and Nicholas Kirton shone brightly as the Global T20 Canada 2024 resumed at the CAA Centre in Brampton. The fourth edition of this premier cricket tournament continued to deliver thrilling matches on Tuesday (July 30).

The North American cricket spectacle saw Bangla Tigers Mississauga and Montreal Tigers emerge victorious in two closely contested games on the fifth day of action. Both teams showcased their prowess, living up to the tournament's high expectations.

Montreal and Bangla Tigers Win in GT20

Choosing to bat first, Montreal Tigers posted a formidable 166/7 against Brampton Wolves, led by David Warner. The highlight was a stunning unbeaten century from 21-year-old Dilpreet Bajwa. The Wolves were bowled out for 124, giving the Tigers a 42-run victory.

This win marked Montreal's third consecutive triumph, solidifying their position at the top of the table with six points. Bajwa, promoted to open with skipper Chris Lynn, displayed his aggressive batting early on by hitting two fours and a six off Jack Jarvis in the second over.

Bajwa's innings included ten boundaries and six sixes in his 55-ball knock, propelling his team to a competitive score. Other contributions came from Parveen Kumar (18), Sherfane Rutherford (15), and Azmatullah Omarzai (13), who added quick runs.

Earlier in the day, Nicholas Kirton's valiant half-century wasn't enough as Toronto Nationals narrowly missed chasing Bangla Tigers Mississauga's 168/7 by just two runs. This thrilling match saw Mississauga secure their second win of GT20 Canada 2024.

Mississauga climbed to third place with four points from three matches. Toronto also has four points but holds second place due to a superior run rate. They experienced their second defeat alongside two victories.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Muhammad Waseem provided Mississauga with a steady start, adding 47 runs for the opening partnership before Toronto struck back with three quick wickets. David Wiese then led a lower-order resurgence with an unbeaten 38, helping his team reach a healthy total.

Toronto's chase faced early setbacks as their top order collapsed during the powerplay, managing only 38 runs. Canadian national team captain Nicholas Kirton spearheaded a dramatic revival with a rapid 74 off 54 balls, hitting seven boundaries and four sixes.

Omarzai's Impactful Spell

Azmatullah Omarzai played a crucial role for Montreal Tigers with his bowling performance. He started with a double-wicket maiden, dismissing Aaron Johnson (10) and Beau Webster after Kaleem Sana had already removed Warner (2). This left Brampton reeling at 17/3 after five overs.

Omarzai returned later to take two more wickets, further stifling Brampton's scoring rate. Despite George Munsey's lone effort of 54 off 34 balls, regular wicket losses kept Brampton out of contention for victory.

Tense Finish for Toronto

Nicholas Kirton received little support from other batters during Toronto's chase. Romario Shepherd was the only lower-order player to resist with an unbeaten 24 off 12 balls. Despite their efforts, Toronto fell short in a nail-biting final over.

The Global T20 Canada continues to captivate fans with its intense matches and standout performances from local players like Bajwa and Kirton. As the tournament progresses, teams will aim to secure crucial wins and climb up the standings.
