Montreal Tigers Dominate League Stage Ahead Of Global T20 Canada Play-offs

The fourth edition of the Global T20 Canada has reached its climax with Montreal Tigers, Brampton Wolves, Bangla Tigers Mississauga, and Toronto Nationals securing their spots in the play-offs.

In the play-offs, Chris Lynn's Montreal Tigers will face David Warner's Brampton Wolves in the first qualifier on Friday. The third and fourth-placed teams, Bangla Tigers Mississauga and Toronto Nationals, will compete in the Eliminator on the same day. The winner of the first qualifier will advance directly to the GT20 Canada final. The losing team will play against the winner of the Eliminator in Saturday's second qualifier for another chance at reaching the final.

Tigers Top Before T20 Play-offs

Defending champions Montreal Tigers topped the table with 10 points after their final league match against Surrey Jaguars was abandoned. The game was reduced to five overs per side due to a delayed start but was eventually called off. Earlier, continuous rain in Brampton on Tuesday led to the abandonment of the first game between second-ranked Wolves and third-ranked Bangla Tigers.

The match between Brampton Wolves and Bangla Tigers Mississauga was cancelled due to heavy rain. It started raining early in the afternoon, and the downpour ensured that covers stayed on the pitch. Both teams ended their league stage with nine points each after playing seven matches.

On Tuesday, Chris Lynn chose to bowl first at the toss. His new ball bowlers Corbin Bosch and Kaleem Sana justified this decision by taking two wickets in the first two overs. However, Jaguars batter Mohammed Nabi had to retire hurt after being hit on his hand by a rising delivery. By then, Jaguars had scored 12 runs.

Match Abandonment

Officials held a lengthy discussion with both captains before deciding to call off the contest. Both teams were awarded one point each as a result.

Surrey Jaguars are out of play-off contention with only four points from their seven league matches. Reflecting on his experience, Jaguars' captain Marcus Stoinis praised the tournament: "Canada loves their cricket; this is a great competition. Yes, conditions have been challenging but that's for everyone out here playing."

"The opportunity that cricket's got at the moment is immense," Stoinis added. "The game's growing around the world; everyone's started playing high-quality cricket. As I have said, it's the best time to be playing cricket in this generation."

The defending champions Montreal Tigers secured their top spot despite weather disruptions affecting their final league game against Surrey Jaguars.

The tournament has seen intense competition among all participating teams, showcasing high-quality cricket despite challenging conditions.

The upcoming play-offs promise exciting matches as teams vie for a place in the GT20 Canada final.
